Some people love FF 8, mostly since it was basicly a love story, but it really wasn't a good game, especially when compared to other FF games at the time. Everything outside that lovestory pretty much sucks, so if you can't get into it, you're better of playing another FF game.
FF8 was a just a downgrade from FF7 as far as gameplay is concerned. FF9's gameplay was clearly designed to fix some of the complaints FF8 recieved. The whole ditch MP and go with a draw system was just an unnecessary and boring change. It just basicly forced you to drag on the fights, instead of just finishing them off as soon as you were able. The junction system erased all differences between characters, GF boosting system was god awful button spam and so on. All unnecessary busywork/boring grind, that all amounted to a huge downgrade in gameplay compared to previous FF games.
The characters were bad after playing other FF games. The protagonist is a whiny little *****, that you just want to smack in the head. The love interest isn't really likable either. The only good thing about her was that you could name her dog Anal or something similar and gain access to some awesomely named special moves like "Anal search", "Anal cannon", "Anal reverse" and "Anal recovery". Then we had the mentos smile boy, a sniper comic relief pimp wannabe, the annoying genki girl and the girl with a whip. None of them were really good or likable for that matter is what I'm saying.
The only good thing about the plot was the romance part, but the rest made even less sense than it usually does in FF games. Weird mercenary schools full of orphaned teenagers all suffering from memory loss, and the whole witches and time compression crap being the worst offenders, with horrible plot twists mixed in to make sure you hate every minute of it. Things like one time main villain being their orphanage caretaker and they all just had forgotten her. Really? Ugh, just horrible stuff. They also forget about previous points in the story when it suited them. The regular armies are in a central role in the early parts of the game, but disappear when things actually start to happen and they had an actual part to play. At least in FF7 the army didn't just magically disappear in to the background when things turned to **** and leave saving the world entirely in the hands of a few teenagers. Although why not, since the main villain isn't even known until the end and you get to see her for the first time pretty much as you enter the final battle of the game. Again, just a horrible way of doing the main villain.
I'm not saying other FF games don't suffer from some of the same issues to some extent, but they usually have other redeeming qualities to make up for sucking in the other departments. FF8 had a romance and that was it. If you don't care for it for whatever reason, the game doesn't really have else to offer you and is average at best. |
